The current Qatari leader is Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. He is the 14th Emir of Qatar and has been in power since 2013.
Sheikh Tamim was born in Doha, Qatar, in 1980. He is the fourth son of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the previous Emir of Qatar. Sheikh Tamim was educated in Qatar and the United Kingdom. He attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the UK and graduated in 1998.
After graduating from Sandhurst, Sheikh Tamim returned to Qatar and joined the Qatari Armed Forces. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant and served in various military positions. In 2003, he was appointed deputy commander-in-chief of the Qatari Armed Forces.
In 2003, Sheikh Tamim was also appointed heir apparent to the Qatari throne. He succeeded his father as Emir in 2013.
As Emir, Sheikh Tamim has overseen a number of changes in Qatar. He has promoted economic diversification and has also sought to improve Qatar's international relations.
